Revision of Information for New Users from Sat, 2008-08-16 16:38

Dear New User,

You have recently registered for a user name on Macrostomorpha.info and this page explains some of the basic features of the site.

First, you need to know that this page uses a content management environment, which was set up by the EDIT (European Institute of Distributed Taxonomy) Initiative. The system has six different levels of users:

- anonymous users are people that simply visit the site coming from the internet
- authenticated users are like you: they have registered, but they have not yet communicated that they want to contribute content
- contributors can contribute content, but that requires some additional instructions (see below)
- editors can alter content that was contributed by contributors
- maintainers can edit most aspects of the site (that is my role at the moment)
- supermaintainers are the people from EDIT that set up the servers and the content management environment

With your registration you have become an authenticated user and after logging in you can perform some limited activities on the site. For example, I have created a file share for you where you can upload files (of up to 20MB) that you want to contribute to the site (you could use this, for example, if you want to contribute a PDF file for the bibliography).

You can access your fileshare at http://macrostomorpha.info/content/fileshare-firstname-lastname (just replace firstname with your first name and lastname with your last name).

If you upload information to your share, please let me know, and I'll incorporate it into the site as soon as possible. If you want to contribute to the site on a more regular basis, please let me know. You can either send me an email about what you want to contribute, or you can write a post by starting a new forum topic to which other people can make suggestions too. I can then upgrade you to become a contributor, and you can add things to the site yourself.

However, this will require you to make changes to the site and you will therefore need to understand in more detail how the site works. You can find this information in the  Scratchpads Guide and you can make tests and trials in the so-called Sandbox (a special scratchpad for testing) where you can make all the changes you want without causing any damage.

Please contact me if you have question.

Cheers,

Lukas
